About the Activities:

Mindfulness Jar

Sometimes our minds can be full of racing thoughts that swirl around our heads like the glitter in the jar. When our minds are calm it is easier to work out problems and talk about what is causing us to be upset.

As the glitter spins around the jar, together watch it until the glitter and your minds settle.

Gratitude Diary

Writing or drawing what you are grateful for can shift your mindset and reframe negative thoughts and make you feel more positive.

Gratitude can be a tricky concept for children. So if your child looks at you blankly ask questions like '“What made you laugh today? Who made you feel loved? What was the best part of your day?”

Breathing Boards

Deep, slow breathing tells our body that it is safe and helps to switch off our body’s stress responses. Using a breathing board with children provides them with a visual cue that helps them maintain their focus and learn the correct technique of deep, slow breathing.

Fiddle Toy

The general rule is that deep pressure is calming. So a massage or big cuddle can help calm racing minds. However, sometimes a cuddle or massage is not possible. So fiddling with a toy can help attention, and focus and provide a calming tactile experience.

Talk about emotions

Understanding our emotions is a vital part of mindfulness and we believe this should be nurtured from a young age. Support and encourage your children to describe their emotions and how their bodies feel when experiencing those emotions. This will help them recognise and become aware of their feelings and their reactions to those feelings.
