Snowflakes

Snowflakes are such extraordinary things and this activity is not only a great way to create your own snowflakes at home but also a wonderful opportunity to discuss with your children what makes them unique!

Set Up

We used the fantastic “The Snowy Day” book as our inspiration and the chalk from our January activity box.
As we don’t have any pavements close by, we used some of the patio slabs in our garden.

Drawing in chalk outside was something that we hadn’t done for a very long time and although it was cold it was a lovely day. Doing this activity was a great excuse to get some fresh air. M started by drawing very simple stars to start off with for her snowflakes. Then we looked at the book illustrations in more detail and looked closely at the patterns and shapes we could see. M went and then started creating the most wonderfully unique snowflakes.

This then prompted the conversation about how we are all unique too. This is something that I am keen for both my two to understand as they grow older. That we are all different and that is a good thing. We talked how special we all are as we are all different. We talked about our own similarities and differences as a family. Not only appearance but then started thinking about our personalities and likes and dislikes. All in all this was a very calm activity and we all enjoyed being outdoors together!
