Visual Story for Starting School

I love visuals. Personally, I use visuals all the time and I have used visuals with my son when a change is coming.

Visuals help all children to process verbal information and they are then able to better understand and retain that information.

As adults we use visuals all the time; a to-do list, road signs, phone reminders, text messages. These are all visuals that help us understand, process and organise our day. Without these visuals, we would probably not get as much done and our anxiety would be higher.

Starting school or nursery can be a worrying time for children. Who will be their teacher? What will I do at school? When will I have lunch? When will I go home? These will be questions that your little one will be mulling over.

So, using a personalised story like this helps children to understand and predict what will happen when they start school and give them some familiarity over the new situation.

It is worth contacting your child's school for photos or visit their website for general photos. Schools want the transition for every child to be as smooth as possible, so will be helpful. If the school is unhelpful look at their website. Most schools have staff photos on their website and some even have video tours of the building.

Once you have personalised the story, I would recommend reading the story daily during the holidays. Your little one may not have further questions immediately after reading the story but those questions will probably come in the bath or out for a walk.
