We're Going on a Bug Hunt

This simple but fun activity for kids to try at home combines two great children’s books. We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Mad about Minibeasts which has inspired our July monthly activity box. Using the language and phrases from books in daily life and play is a great way to embed new vocabulary for children.

Literacy Activity for Kids

Set Up

I used our magnifying bug pots from our Minibeasts Activity Box and also had the two books ready to read.

First we read We’re Going on a Bear Hunt to refresh the language from the story. If you don’t have a copy of the story there are often versions of the story being read on You Tube. And then off we went on our bug hunt using phrases from the story. “Uh oh, long wavy grass” “We’ll have to go through it!”

Through the woods, “stumble, trip, stumble, trip.” We had so much fun and the girls really were great at using their imagination. Both joined in using the language from the story and we even managed to find the odd bug or two. This easy activity really is a great way to help make the language from stories come to life.
