Rainbow Rice

I think rice is a wonderful sensory resource. It takes up food colouring really well, feels lovely between fingers and makes a wonderful noise when it is moved around. Plus it’s a lot easier to clean up than sand.

By using the black oven tray it contained the rice but it also make the colours of the rice stand out and amplified the sound of the rice.

The day before I planned to do the activity, I used food colouring to dye the rice. I kept the rice somewhere warm so that the rice could dry out. I have discovered that using a gel food colouring is much easier and cuts down the amount of time that the rice needs before it is dry.

The spoons are measuring spoons which I had bought from HobbyCraft. These would also work well.

The tin was an old roasting tin which I had in the cupboard. Using the black oven tray made the rainbow of rice visually enticing for my little one. The sound that the rice landing on the oven tray makes is also very appealing to little ears.

This was an activity that my son was immediately drawn to. He spent ages dragging the spoons from one side of the tin to the other.

I wanted to join in but I was quickly told “no Mummy.” So I sat back and watched him.

Once the rice was mixed together, my little one very happily sat at his table and scooped the rice with the spoons and then poured the contents back out. He was so happy playing with the rainbow, that I could make myself a cup of tea and start dinner.

This is such a good engaging activity for a child that we will definitely be repeating this activity at home.
