Survival Blanket

This is a very easy activity that can be done at home with small babies and toddlers alike. Ever since my very early teaching days, I have loved the possibilities of a survival blanket as a sensory resource. Babies and children seem drawn to them; the way it sounds as it is moved, the reflection of the light against it. They are just wonderful. An added bonus is they fold really small so are fantastic to put in your nappy bag for a toy whilst out and about.

They are also a great way to teach cause and effect. Cause and effect is one of the first stepping stones to speech. Each time baby moves, the blanket crackles and the light changes. Survival blankets are normally very big and so are great for play-dates as babies can lie on the survival blankets together.
